With so much going on "in-house" there is really no need to go down to the town unless you want to. The Youth Hostel staff organise daily deliveries of many cases of beer and Guiness and run a tab sheet, payable at the end of the week. Good company, plenty to do, warm surroundings, and cheap booze. What more can you ask for?
