"It will be an honour to play with Gavin Stoddard. We know the music we have to learn but with a big mass band it's all about timing and tuning so we have been practising."

The Exeter pipers play at up to 30 events a year, including carnivals and fetes and official Exeter parades such as St George's Day.

All wear the Robertson tartan in honour of their founder and they are the only band allowed to use the Exeter coat of arms.

The band was founded 25 years ago by Mr Robertson and others who had moved to Devon from Scotland.

It will spend four days in Belgium, rehearsing one day and then taking part in the parade for the next two.

Expected at the ceremony are veterans and members of the Scottish Assembly, who raised money to pay for the memorial.
