Training the PDQB way...
The City of Exeter Pipes and Drums Band runs its own
Piper/Drummer Training Program, under the directorship of Pipe
Major Colin Opie, and other trained teachers. It is ideally
suited to those who are completely new to the Pipes and Drums
band environment. Piping itself is rather unique in that you
practice, and learn to play scales, exercises and tunes, on one
instrument (a practice chanter), but then play another - the
Great Highland Bagpipe - when performing. You also have to
learn all tunes off by heart. There is no marching down the
street with an instrument mounted mini music stand in front of
you, as with some other marching bands. The instrument itself
is a lesson in patience when it comes to maintenance and
tuning, especially if you are having to move between different
temperatures and climates.
Drumming skills are equally unique, and take considerable
practice. The training program will also introduce you to the
art of reading and writing drum scores. Note that bass drummers
come from tenor drum stock, and you will need to have the right
physique to be able to carry the bass drum. Ordinarily the
appropriately qualified senior tenor drummer will be the bass
drummer at all events, so opportunities for bass drum playing
can be relatively rare, even when trained and qualified.
All in all then, a solid, progressive learning environment
is the very essence for becoming a good all-round player. The
scheme we run is suited as much to juniors as adults, and
everyone can learn at their own pace. See our recruitment page
for current status.
